If your compassion doesn't include yourself
Self-doubt and self-criticism are serious dangers to your productivity and happiness. When you are unkind to yourself, you cannot create your best work. When you believe that negative self-talk, you cannot run the extra mile and create something great.
In order to be successful and happy, we need to make self-forgiveness and self-compassion a daily practice. This will allow you to bounce back faster after episodes of weakness.
Self-compassion is simply giving the same kindness to yourself that you would give to others. You wouldn’t criticize a baby when she is learning to crawl. She is doing something amazing. She is expanding her possibilities and persisting until success, while having great fun. To achieve this goal (and many others) start building a practice of compassion and forgiveness.
Every night before you go to bed, ask yourself: “Have I been compassionate with myself today?”
Give it serious consideration. Did you talk bad about yourself? Are you flagellating yourself for your mistakes? Are you comparing yourself to others?
Shower this answer with a warm bath of compassion. Accept your weaknesses as your “features.” Look at your past as an adventurous biography. Remember that what you are experiencing is human. You are not alone. Any problem or weakness that you are now experiencing has been experienced by someone else. Remember that all this is part of learning, growing, and expanding.
After you have forgiven yourself – even if you don’t feel you have been able to fully forgive yourself – think about “what is next?” If you failed to build a new habit, plan to take immediate action and work on this promise. Do it immediately. If you did it “wrong,” plan to do it again, this time more intelligently. Do it immediately.
When you take swift action, you will feel that love in action. You will feel that you can do it. You will feel your own self growing in love, as you achieve results and find happiness.
